So in science textbooks (we can discuss if psychology is a real science or not later), usually they'll provide some sort of information and then reference the experimenter that supported the assertion in parentheses...

With that said, here is an excerpt from my psyc 106 book:

"When neurons release neurotransmitters, they simultaneously release the neurotrophins, and neurons that fail to release the neurotransmitters withhold the neurotrophins as well, so their target cells die (Poo, 2001)."
